      Automation Operator - RSC My Neighbour Totoro

      We are looking to appoint an experienced Automation Operator for the global premiere of Studio Ghibli's My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican, London this year. This position is offered as a fixed term contract, commencing on 21 August 2022 until 22 January 2023. As an Automation Operator, you will report directly to the Head of Automation and participate in the smooth running of the show, to include fitting, installing, commissioning, programming, rehearsals, performances, load in and get-out. Key responsibilities include: Responding to and cooperating with the needs of the Company and Stage Management and Production Manager teams Operating the Desk [five]/ Desk [three] Absolute Motion control Console Assisting the Automation Head of Department and freelance staff in the installation and operation of all automated elements for the show Keeping accurate logs of system faults Communicating clearly and liaising with other departments Following working at height procedures Participating in regular maintenance and monitoring, including first line fault-finding and repairs Maintaining and demonstrating high standards of craft skills and technical competence To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have the following skills and experience: Experience in operating automation systems Knowledge of setting up and operating automation systems in the entertainment industry An understanding of theatre staging, stage engineering, rigging, slinging and flying Knowledge and understanding of show control systems in live performance Ability to fault find and rectify problems in electrical and show control systems Understanding of hoists, motors and trussing The ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team Whilst this post is based at the Barbican in London, you will be required to attend rehearsals for two weeks from 21 August, which are taking place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As an Automation Deputy, you will report directly to the Head of Automation and participate in the smooth running of the show, to include fitting, installing, commissioning, programming, rehearsals, performances, load in and get-out. You will deputise for the Head of Automation when appropriate and take a senior role in the smooth running of the department.       Technical Swing - Automation Department

      Purpose: The Automation & Effects department is a team of four, responsible for the running and maintenance of the shows Automation equipment and various special effects, including pyrotechnics. We are looking for a Technical Swing to join the Automation & Effects department, ensuring that effective and efficient support is in place for the production. To contribute to, and participate in, the smooth running of performances and rehearsals to the highest possible standard and to ensure the show is well maintained as directed by the Head of Department. Key Responsibilities • To assist in the running of all pre-show checks as scheduled by the HOD. • To carry out the automaton deck plot and special effects plot in a safe manor, ensuring the safety of performers and crew onstage and in the wings during both shows and rehearsals. • To take responsibility for automation equipment as required and keep the head of automation informed of any issues as they arise. • Carry out maintenance on the automation system as directed by the HOD. • To assist with the procurement and maintenance of adequate stocks of consumables and spares. • To assist the Special Effects technician in the preparation of pyrotechnics and various other special effects when required. • To work in a co-operative and collaborative manner with the Head of Automation, Production Manager, Company Manager, Stage Manager, and resident creative team in establishing and executing the automation needs of the production both in rehearsal and performance. Attributes Essential Attributes: • Previous automation experience on a west end or touring production. • Experience running deck plots and an understanding of stage etiquette. • An understanding and practical knowledge of the principles and safe working practices of theatre rigging, automation systems and set construction. • The ability to work within a small team. • Co-operation and adaptability. • Good communication. Desirable Attributes: • Previous knowledge of Silicon Theatre Scenery (STS) Automation systems. • Previous experience of working on a Large-Scale West End show. • Qualifications relevant to this post.
